A uPVC door that has started fighting you is not usually a door that needs replacing. The mechanism inside the door, the multipoint lock with the hooks and rollers along the edge, does the work, and when it starts to fail you get the warning signs long before it strands you.
The thing to know is that these doors almost always give you notice. A handle that needs a shove, a door you have to lean on to lock, a key that only turns if you lift at the same time. That is the mechanism wearing or the door sitting slightly out of line, and dealt with early it is a straightforward repair.
Left alone, it eventually seizes, usually with the door shut. Then it is a lockout, a forced entry and a new mechanism instead of an adjustment.
You probably need this if
- You have to lift the handle hard, or lean on the door, to lock it
- The handle has gone floppy or feels disconnected
- The key turns but nothing happens
- The door locks when it is open but not when it is shut
- You can see the hooks not lining up with the keeps on the frame
- The door has dropped and catches on the frame
