A key usually snaps because it has been wearing for a while, or because the lock has been stiffening and the key has been taking the strain. The break itself is sudden, but the cause rarely is.
If part of the key is still in the lock, do not push it further in and please do not attack it with superglue or pliers. Both make extraction harder and can turn a straightforward job into a replacement cylinder.
With the right extraction tools the broken section usually comes out cleanly and the lock carries on working. I will also tell you why it snapped, because if the lock is binding it will do the same to the next key.
You probably need this if
- The key has snapped with part of it inside the lock
- The key snapped in the door and you are now locked out
- Your key has been bending or feeling gritty for a while
- You have a spare key but the broken piece is blocking the lock
What happens
- I extract the broken section with proper extraction tools
- I check the lock for the wear or binding that caused the break
- I cut you a replacement key on site where I can
- If the lock itself is worn out, I tell you the cost before replacing it
