Most front doors in this area are uPVC with a euro cylinder, and a large number of them are fitted with the cheap cylinder that came with the door. That type can be snapped by hand in seconds with no specialist tools, which is why it is the method most commonly used to get into houses around here.

An anti-snap cylinder to the current British Standard is built to break in a controlled place, leaving the mechanism still holding the door shut. It is a small part and it makes a genuine difference, unlike a lot of what gets sold as a security upgrade.

I will tell you honestly what your door needs. If your existing lock is fine, I will say so, and you will not be paying me to replace something that was not the problem.

You probably need this if

  • You have just moved in and do not know who has keys
  • You have lost a key, or a set has been stolen
  • A relationship has ended and you want the locks changed
  • Your insurer has asked for British Standard locks
  • Your cylinder sticks out past the handle, which makes snapping easier
  • A tenancy has ended

Common questions

What is an anti-snap lock?
A euro cylinder built with a sacrificial section, so that if someone grips and snaps it the outer part breaks away and the part that holds your door shut stays put. Look for a cylinder marked to the current British Standard with a kitemark.
Do I need to change every lock in the house?
Usually not. If you have lost keys then yes, every lock those keys opened. If you have just moved in, the external doors are the priority and internal doors rarely matter.
Can I have all my doors on one key?
Often yes. Keying alike means one key opens your front door, back door and garage. It is convenient and it costs less than you would think, though it does mean one lost key affects everything.
Will a new lock affect my insurance?
It can help. Plenty of home insurance policies ask for a British Standard lock on final exit doors, and some will not pay out if you cannot show forced entry on a door that did not meet the requirement. Check your policy wording, and I will fit to it.
