Barnsley is two different jobs for a locksmith and the line between them runs roughly north to south through the town. East of it, in the Dearne, Grimethorpe, Cudworth, Wombwell and Darfield are pit villages, with terraced rows and large interwar and post-war estates at Athersley, Kendray and Worsbrough. West of it, past Dodworth, the ground starts climbing toward the Pennines and you are into stone.
The stone half changes what is possible. Around Penistone, Silkstone and Cawthorne you find heavy timber doors hung in thick stone openings, ironmongery that was never standard in the first place, and doors that have been rehung, packed and repaired by several generations of whoever owned the place. Those are the jobs where a replacement lock off a shelf simply does not fit the mortice that is already cut, and where repairing what is in the door beats enlarging the hole to suit a modern part.
In the east it is the opposite problem and a far more predictable one. Streets of ex-council houses had uPVC doors fitted as a batch, so a whole row is running the same mechanism of the same age. If your handle has started wanting a shove and your neighbour says the same, that is not a coincidence, and it is a repair now or a lockout later.
