Sheffield is where I am based, and it is also the most varied place I work. The city is built across a set of steep hills and the housing changes every time you cross one. The stone terraces climbing out of Walkley and Crookes are a different proposition from the bay-fronted 1930s semis in Woodseats and Millhouses, which are different again from the big Victorian villas around Broomhill and Ranmoor, a large number of which have been divided into flats.
That is not scenery, it changes the job. A stone terrace off South Road will often still have its original timber front door, a rim night latch above and a mortice deadlock below, and the real question is usually whether that mortice meets the British Standard your insurer has asked for. A replacement uPVC or composite door on an estate in Parson Cross, Gleadless or Firth Park is an entirely different animal, a multipoint mechanism with hooks running down the edge of the door, where the fault is far more often the mechanism or the alignment than the lock you actually put the key in.
The other thing about Sheffield is how much of it is rented. Between the two universities and the sheer number of converted houses around Crookesmoor, Broomhill and Ecclesall Road, a fair share of the lock changes I do are tenancy changeovers where nobody can say with any confidence how many keys are in circulation. If you have just taken a property on and the honest answer to that question is a shrug, change the cylinder before you worry about anything else.
